Michael David
Hipes
Aug 20, 1947 — Aug 12, 2026
Kamiah
Michael David Hipes,78, lovingly known as Mike, passed away peacefully on August 12, 2026, at his home in Kamiah, Idaho, with his beloved wife by his side. Born on August 20, 1947, in Santa Barbara, California to Alex and Velna (DePonce) Hipes, Mike’s life was marked by devotion to family, service to others, and a deep enjoyment of the natural world.
Mike grew up in Santa Barbara, attending Hope Elementary and La Colina Junior High before graduating from San Marcos High School with the class of 1965. He furthered his education at Santa Barbara City College, earning an associate’s degree in Fire Science. This degree path would shape both his career and his legacy.
In 1967, Mike departed for Germany, where he served with distinction as a combat engineer in the United States Army until 1969. His experience contributed to a lifelong commitment to protecting and serving others, a value that would remain central throughout his life.
Upon returning home, Mike began what would become a remarkable 31-year career with the Santa Barbara County Fire Department. Starting in October 1972, his hard work and dedication led him to ascend the ranks, becoming a fire captain in 1984. He eventually retired in 2003 as a respected station captain, admired for his professionalism, courage, and unwavering commitment to his team and community.
Beyond his professional achievements, Mike loved the outdoors, finding peace in fishing for steelhead and trout or pursuing large game across the western states. He cherished the memories of fishing trips with his father and delighted in new adventures, especially when traveling with his beloved Pam. Whether enjoying serene days on the water or exploring nature’s expanse, Mike found fulfillment and joy surrounded by the beauty of the world.
Mike and Pam had a long-time relationship and their connection blossomed. They were married on March 19, 2002, beginning a wonderful, shared journey. Together, they discovered the beauty of Idaho, ultimately finding and settling on their retirement land there—a dream they realized side by side. Mike contributed to many community events in Kamiah, like being Santa Clause, participating in the pumpkin party, and serving as the fire commissioner. His greatest highlights he had in Kamiah was being the Grand Marshall for BBQ Days one year.
He is preceded in death by his father, Alex Hipes; his mother, Velma Hipes; his sister, Novell Hipes; and his brother, Jimmy Hipes.
Mike’s legacy is carried on by his devoted wife, Pam Hipes, his cherished niece Adrienne Bates, her husband Mike Bates, and his Great- Nephew Mike Bates. His gentle spirit, warmth, and laughter will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Throughout his life, Mike’s proudest accomplishments were those closest to his heart: marrying Pam and protecting and serving his communities. In Lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Kamiah Fire Department.
